Chemical Engineering Interview Questions

Chemical Engineering Interview Questions

1. What is Chemical Engineering?

Ans. Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the design, development, and operation of processes for the production of various materials and chemicals.

2. What is the difference between a chemical process and a unit operation?

Ans. A chemical process is a combination of unit operations used to transform raw materials into a desired product, while a unit operation is a single step in a process that does not involve a chemical reaction.

3. What are the four primary unit operations in chemical engineering?

Ans. The four primary unit operations in chemical engineering are distillation, filtration, evaporation, and crystallization.

4. What Are Some Common Causes Of Gas Pipeline Vibration 20 Carbon Steel Line?

Ans. The upper pressure range and /or the smaller pipe diameters prompts me to investigate the possibility that the gas is reaching critical flow somewhere downstream within the pipe. When a gas gets to critical flow, sonic booms (producing vibration) are expected. In fact, one of the main means by which the additional pressure in the pipe is lost. If the source is a compressor, look for surging.

If the source is a tower, look for pressure cycling in the tower Look at critical flow through any control valve that may be in the line.

5. While There, Are Many Tests Available To Detect Leaks On Vessels, Is There A Technology Available To Quantify The Leak, Or Measure The Flow Through A Leak?

Ans. The RheoVac air in-leak monitor by Intek, Inc. in Westerville, OH is a viable meter that gives the actual air in-leakage flow rate. It also gives you exhauster capacity and a vacuum quality reading.

Chemical Engineering Interview Questions & Answers

6. What is Gibbs free energy?

Ans. It is the available energy or the greatest amount of mechanical work done by a system at constant temperature and pressure.

7. At what temperature does water have maximum density?

Ans. At 4 deg C the density of water is 1000 kg/cu.m.

8. What is a black body?

Ans. An ideal object that absorbs all electromagnetic radiations.

9. What is critical radius of insulation?

Ans. The critical radius of insulation is the thickness of an insulation that does not affect the convection resistance. It is the ratio of the thermal conductivity of the insulator to the convection heat transfer coefficient.

10. Explain the working of a spray condenser?

Ans. A spray condenser is used for the condensation of humid water vapor by direct contact with water. The inlet water is at a temperature less than the dew point of air in the chamber.

Chemical Engineering Interview Questions

11. What are the greenhouse gases in earth’s atmosphere?

Ans. Water vapor, carbon dioxide, ozone, methane, nitrous oxide and CFC.

12. What is carbon sequestration?

Ans. A technique for capturing carbon dioxide for a long term in order to reduce its effects on global warming.

13. Explain global warming from a common man’s and an engineer’s perspective?

Ans. In a common man’s perspective, the increase in world temperatures is global warming. In an engineer’s perspective, it is the average temperature increase in the surface temperature of the earth, mainly due to increased concentration of greenhouse gases. The greenhouse gases capture the heat radiated by the earth, inside the atmosphere, enabling the increase in temperature.

14. Explain the functioning of a three-way catalytic converter?

Ans. Carbon monoxide oxidation, Nitrogen oxide reduction, uncombusted hydrocarbon oxidation.

15.What does a Chemical Engineer do?

Ans. chemical engineer is responsible for designing, constructing, and operating industrial plants that manufacture chemicals and other products.

A Chemical Engineer may design, develop and test chemical processes and products.

They may also work with various teams to improve chemical manufacturing and treatment processes’ safety, efficiency, and quality.

Chemical Engineering Interview Questions

16. What are the factors that come under operation cost?

Ans. The operating cost comprises many factors including energy input, raw material cost, energy removal, labor etc.

17. What is electro catalyst?

Ans. An electro catalyst is a catalyst that participates in electrochemical reactions. Catalyst materials modify and increase the rate of chemical reactions without being consumed in the process. Electro catalysts are a specific form of catalysts that function at electrode surfaces or may be the electrode surface itself. The electro catalyst assists in transferring electrons between the electrode and reactants and facilitates an intermediate chemical transformation described by an overall half reaction.

18. What is Deacon reaction?

Ans. The deacon process is a process used during the manufacture of alkalis by the Leblanc process. Hydrogen chloride gas was converted to chlorine gas, which was then used to manufacture a commercially valuable bleaching powder, and at the same time the emission of waste hydrochloric acid was curtailed. The reaction takes place at about 400 to 450 degree Celsius in the presence of a variety of catalysts including copper chloride.

Chemical Engineering Interview Questions

19. Define entropy?

Ans. Entropy, a measure of the disorder in a system containing energy or information. The less ordered a system is, the greater is its entropy. In thermodynamics, entropy is given in terms of the heat transferred to or from a substance at a given temperature.

20. Explain the third law of thermodynamics?

Ans. The third law of thermodynamics is essentially a statement about the ability to create an absolute temperature scale, for which absolute zero is the point at which the internal energy of a solid is precisely 0. Three potential formulations of the third law of thermodynamics are is impossible to reduce any system to absolute zero in a finite series of operations.

2.The entropy of a perfect crystal of an element in its most stable form tends to zero as the temperature approaches absolute zero.

3.As temperature approaches absolute zero, the entropy of a system approaches a constant.

Chemical Engineering Interview Questions

21. What is the difference between horizontal and vertical heat exchanger?

Ans. The main difference between horizontal and vertical heat exchanger is residence time fluid which flow in horizontal heat exchanger gets more residence time as compared to vertical heat exchanger.

22. What is the difference between unit operation and unit process?

Ans. A pure unit operation involves only a physical change examples drying, size reduction, distillation, filtration etc. where as in general unit operation involves physical and chemical change. And a unit process is a number of unit operations grouped together in a manufacturing system.

23. Why should we hire you?

Ans. It is time to prove yourself as a suitable fit for the organization. Describe about your knowledge, skills and experience in order to stand apart from other candidates. However, you should remember, not to repeat what you have already said. Say in a positive and confident tone so as to impress the interviewer.
